Like many people, I spent my early years enjoying great health while completely ignoring my body.
As a painter for film and television I demanded that it work day and night, that it crawl and climb, that it put up with toxic chemicals and dust. Totally lost in my head, I ignored all the signals it was sending and was shocked when I was diagnosed with cancer before I was even 30.
It was the rudest of awakenings, but by the time I was recovering from breast surgery I was more than ready to start listening. Luckily for me, I was living in New York City, the birthplace of Pilates, and during my journey back to health I encountered the method which would have such a massive and wonderful effect on my life.
Before long, I had recovered my strength, regained the use of my arms and was ready to go deeper. I discovered muscles I’d never used, breath to give me power, and an ability to explore inner space where I could really sense what capacity could be tapped into to exist in the world in comfort and with ease. Once I had acquired this knowledge, I found myself eager to share it with others, and it has been my joy and privilege to do so. To discover what your body is capable of, to go deeper into understanding of self, to get out of chronic pain, is an amazing gift that anybody can have with a little patience and curiosity. I love to teach those who have no experience with Pilates because it’s so much fun to watch the transformation within and without. People who think they hate exercise are some of my favorites!
